In order to leave the classes 2043 and 2143 free for passenger train service, 34 locomotives of the DB class 211 were procured. These locomotives, remotorised with a Caterpillar engine, were used in shunting and freight train services at the Wels, Wien Nord, Amstetten and Krems train haulage companies.
