The 5,120 kW locomotives, which could run at speeds of up to 160 km/h, shaped the modern image of the ÖBB for many years. From 2002 onwards, all 1044 locomotives were equipped with a reversing train control. This made the vehicles, now re-designated 1144, even more flexible in use.
